Being Mindful Amidst the Busy Life

Written by

Dear Miracle Workers,

We all experience life at a different level of busyness. Some of us enjoy having a full schedule of things to do and some of us prefer to limit our external tasks and prioritize other things. As a Libra, I attempt to find balance in my life between my “to do” list and time for personal time to read, reflect, relax, pray, and meditate. A Course in Miracles says "This quiet center, in which you do nothing, will remain with you, giving you rest in the midst of every busy doing on which you are sent. (FIP.Tx.18.VII.8:3)

We have many thoughts that occur to us during the course of a day. Our forgiveness lessons keep showing up until we heal them. I have a much better day when I stay in the present moment or the now. I can say “Oh, there is my attack thought about a colleague, friend, institution or the traffic in San Francisco." The first part for me is being aware of the perception. I know if I’m upset then I’ve chosen for the ego.

The beautiful thing about practicing the principles of A Course in Miracles is that we can elect to change our mind at any time. Our responsibility is to be willing to ask. I know that I can find excuses for not asking. I believe that I’m too busy. I believe that my task or situation is too important to ask for a miracle. However, I can stay in that quiet center when I commit my day to miracles. I am innocent. My fellows are innocent. Miracles keep the peace. Decide for peace and be happy!

Dear Miracle Workers,

I have a hard time sitting still. It’s kind of a problem. “Be still and know I am” is in the “How To” book on enlightenment. Even a sign on my wall reminds, “Make time for the quiet moments as God whispers and the world is loud.” So it’s not surprising that in our lessons we are often asked to quietly reflect. But in Lesson 124 Jesus asks us to sit and meditate for 30 minutes. He says it is the, "... first attempt at an extended period for which we give no rules nor special words to guide your meditation." (OrEd.WkBk.124.8)

I wanted to know, do I really have to sit still for 30 minutes? Aren’t there a lot of different ways to focus on an idea without sitting quietly and doing nothing?

So I tested it. Every morning, when the sky is still dark and stars still shine, I take a walk before cars or people are out. It’s quiet, it’s peaceful and there’s really nothing to distract my attention. It’s a perfect time for self-introspection and quiet reflection. On my walk one day I repeated and reflected on the idea from Lesson 124: “Let me remember I am one with God.”

I’m here to tell you, it didn’t work. Not because I wasn’t inspired, or wasn’t focused. And not because it wasn’t important to me. It didn’t work because the physical act of walking had the effect of anchoring my mind to my body. The “not me” who was walking in a body had a hard time being “me” outside of the body and One with God at the same time. (And “me” in Oneness also had a hard time walking in a straight line!)

I guess sometimes we just have to sit there.

A Course in Miracles states "The sole responsibility of the miracle worker is to accept the Atonement for himself." (OrEd.Tx.2.65) The New Year gives us a perfect opportunity to reinforce our sole purpose and evaluate how we are applying it to our relationships. We all interact in various circles. We also know that the decisions we make determine the experience that we have in our relational lives. My talk with focus how we can apply the principle of the atonement to these various relationship spheres in our lives. Dear Miracle Workers,

It’s all arbitrary, this thing called time, calendars, an old year ending, a new year beginning. In truth there is nothing truly significant about that moment between midnight and midnight, December 31st 2021 and January 1, 2022. It is our minds that makes these moments significant. "I have given everything I see ... all the meaning that it has for me." (OrEd.WkBk.2) While there is no doubt that this is true the desire to make the coming midnight moment significant is very strong. We still seem to exist in a world that is constantly aware of what time it is. We have clocks everywhere ”Yet what meaning can the words convey to those who count the hours still and rise and work and go to sleep by them?" (OrEd.WkBk.169.9)

2021 started in the midst of the pandemic which we had thought was over but then surged again. 2021 ends in the midst of a pandemic which we had thought was over but then surged again. I think I’ve had enough of that repetition "Human living has indeed been needlessly wasted in a repetition compulsion." (OrEd.Tx.4.3) I am definitely ready to let go of this repetition compulsion.

There is always reason to be joyful, sometimes it just seems a little more challenging to stay focussed on that, but I believe we are up for the challenge. Perhaps it is useful to associate joy with freedom. This ACIM passage about the new year does, “So will the year begin in joy and freedom. There is much to do, and we have been long delayed." (OrEd.Tx.15.112) While it may not seem to be the most joyful and free thing to think about how much work we have ahead of us in the new year, at least we know we are needed.

Three days till Christmas. “WooHoo!!”

Written by

Dear Miracle Workers,

In three days we will celebrate the holiday most mentioned in ACIM, Christmas. Today I am reminded of this reference. "In this season (Christmas), which celebrates the birth of holiness into this world, join with me, who decided for holiness for you. It is our task together to restore the awareness of magnitude to the host whom God appointed for Himself." (OrEd.Tx.15.29) Let’s review the important Christmas ideas contained here. What is this season truly celebrating? It’s celebrating the birth of holiness into the world. The Course doesn’t say anything about celebrating Jesus’ birth, but the birth of holiness. Commit yourself to only perceiving holiness in the world. That is how holiness will be birthed into the world. We will put it there by our chosen perception, by Christ’s vision.

How to we do this? We do this by joining with Jesus because Jesus has decided for holiness for all of us already. All we have to do in join him. Ready! Set! JOIN!

I love the next idea that we now have a joined and sacred task. It is our job! We, all together, are bonded in a Divine job, to restore an awareness of magnitude to all beings. We are all the host, the vessel, which is hosting God and thus making God manifest. All the brothers, sisters, and others hosting God (all of us) were once aware of our magnitude, our grandeur, but through a simple mistake we tumbled into an identity that appeared limited and weak. Now, our job, joined with Jesus, is to restore that awareness of magnitude. We are all grand and amazing. We are all invulnerable. There is no “Kryptonite” to destroy our invulnerability. Be a “Superbeing” this Christmas and communicate to others that they are a “Superbeings” too. “Merry Christmas you Superhero!"

It is that time of year when we have the permission of the collective mind to allow love to enter into our shared experience. Somehow, this miracle has manifested for a diverse peoples of many faiths, races, nationalities, cultures, and belief systems. In the world of the ego this is a true miracle. My talk will focus on the importance of taking advantage of this season to provide a spiritual booster for the present moment and the New Year that awaits us!! 24 min. SUBSCRIBE & SHARE

'Christ Mass' Literally

Written by

Dear Miracle Workers

We say that word a lot and don’t think about it much, but “Christmas” literally means “Christ mass” or “a religious celebration for the Christ.” We ACIM students know that “Christ” is not just another name for Jesus. While Jesus (we believe) became totally identified with his Christ Self, that same Christ Self is at the foundation of each of us as well. A “Christ mass” would actually mean we are celebrating our own true “Christed” Selves. "Christ is God's Son as He created Him. He is the Self we share, uniting us with one another and with God as well." (OrEd.WkBk.SpTp271.1)

In an attempt to counteract the secular consumerism of Christmas, religious people often remind others “Jesus is the reason for the season.” However we ACIM students know that that isn’t really true either. We are the reason for the season, but the “we” must be our true Selves, the Christ within at the foundation of our being. This holiday celebrate your own rebirth as the Christ. Let’s face it, December 25th was never Jesus’ birthday anyway and everybody knows that.

"Watch with me, angels; watch with me today. Let all God's holy thoughts surround me and be still with me while Heaven's Son is born .... for He is born again in me today." (OrEd.WkBk.203.1) The Herald Angels announcing the birth of Christ are announcing our own birth. Do you hear their glorious trumpets? I do! And we have arrived here on earth as Christ just in time. The Great Awakening awaits us. It is time for us to do our part. "There is much to do, and we have been long delayed. Accept the holy instant as this year is born and take your place, so long left unfulfilled, in the Great Awakening." (OrEd.Tx.15.112)

12.12.21 Video "A Christmas State of Mind"

Written by

(Click on "Read more..." for larger player)

We’re deep into the holiday season. Thanksgiving and Chanukah are behind us and Christmas is coming ‘round the corner. While looking up references in ACIM to Christmas I found this one and realized that it was not in the FIP blue book. "Christmas is not a time; it is a state of mind. The Christ Mind wills from the Soul, not from the ego, and the Christ Mind is yours." (OrEd.Tx.4.41) Wow! What a teaching to leave out! Are we all claiming the Christmas state of mind? Reminds me of the old Billy Joel song, “New York State of Mind.” (1976) Let’s explore this state and see what its characteristics are: love, abundance, giving, peace, joy, – family & friends, comfort food, Christmas carols, … Let’s all claim a Christmas state of mind. 26 min. Motivation

Written by

Dear Miracle Workers,

Sometimes I forget to apply the Course. I think it’s because I know it’ll work, which means I’m willing to suffer some more. It’s okay that I’m willing to suffer and sacrifice, but I remind myself that I’m doing it. The ego has no power. The ego is not making me do or think anything I’m not willing to agree with. Since the ego is senseless and vicious I have to remember that I’m willing to listen to its siren song. It’s like an addiction.

However the goal of happiness is attainable if I remember that real power beyond my little self is in me. “God is indeed your strength. And what He gives is truly given. … Your passage through time and space is not random. You cannot but be in the right place at the right time. Such is the strength of God. Such are His gifts.” (OrEd.WkBk.42.2)

That’s true motivation! There are no accidents, and God goes with us wherever we go. It doesn’t matter why I’m still attracted to guilt, pain, and suffering. It only matters that there’s a way out. So, I’m determined to get out of my head space and into practicing. That’s where I’ll find God. And that, my friends, is motivation. When I remember why the heck I do A Course in Miracles then I’m immediately brought back to truth. “It is quite possible to reach God. In fact it is very easy because it is the most natural thing in the world.” (OrEd.WkBk.41.7)

I want it easy, and so when I’m in pain or any kind of suffering I remind myself gently that I do not need to go through this. There is another way. I choose once again the easy, simple way to God. And I practice.

Lessons from Star Wars

Written by

Dear Miracle Workers,

In the first Star Wars movie, Luke, Han Solo, Chewy, C-3PO, R2-D2, and Obi-Wan Kenobi join together to rescue Princess Leia from Darth Vader, who is holding her captive. But as they speed through space and approach Vader’s Death Star, their ship, the Millennium Falcon, is caught in the Death Star’s tractor beam and slowly pulled inside the giant ship. They hide in secret places, then sneak out to find Leia. Obi-Wan, however, breaks off from the group to disable the tractor beam. On the way, he encounters Darth Vader.

Darth Vader – keeper of the “dark side” of the Force squares off against Obi-Wan – Jedi Knight of the Light. They battle fiercely until that moment when Obi-Wan stands in front of Vader and lowers his light saber. “If you strike me down,” he says, “I shall become more powerful than you can possibly imagine.” Vader cuts him in half but Obi-Wan’s body disappears leaving only a cloak in a pile on the floor.

I thought of this and of those who have been studying the Course for years. Clearly we are “experts” in one sense. We know what it says, we understand what it means, and our lives have been transformed as a result. But, in another sense, we are just as newbie as everyone else. Because if we really got it, really understood who we were, we wouldn’t still be here.

Think about it, once Jesus figured it out, he didn’t stick around for very long. He knew his power and communication would only increase upon his leaving. Like Obi-Wan, Jesus became more powerful than the forces of dark could ever imagine. “Nothing can prevail against a Son of God who commends his Spirit into the hands of his Father.” (OrEd.Tx.3.19)
